What is hallux valgus?
The big toe bends towards the other toes, creating a foot bump. Causes: narrow shoes, high heels, heredity, flat feet or arthritis. Poor footwear causes pressure and friction, which can lead to bursitis.
Symptoms
Bump at the base of the big toe, pain when wearing shoes, redness and swelling. Burning sensation, difficulty walking. Sometimes osteoarthritis in the big toe.
Treatment of hallux valgus
Roomier shoes or bunion shoes reduce pressure. Toe spreaders or correctors keep the toe in a more natural position. Insoles improve foot alignment. Physiotherapy strengthens foot muscles. Painkillers or anti-inflammatories for pain. In severe cases: surgery.
Prevention: wear shoes with enough room for the toes. Avoid high heels and narrow toe boxes. Regular foot exercises keep the foot flexible.
